Church Under the Bridge Provides Weekly Worship and Meal Service for Greensboro Homeless Community (Greensboro, North Carolina)
Dozens of members of the unsheltered community gathered under a bridge in downtown Greensboro last weekend for a weekly worship service. Known as Church Under the Bridge, the gathering is organized by 16 Cents Ministry and held every Saturday at 300 Spring Garden Street. The event includes a full church service and provides a meal to those in need.
Mike Murray, director of 16 Cents Ministry, explained that the service has been held consistently for the past 10 years. “That was one of the core values. The Lord called us to be consistent,” he said. Each week, Murray brings preachers and singers to the bridge to deliver a complete worship experience.
The ministry addresses both spiritual and practical needs. Murray noted that they strive to meet the immediate needs of those who come to the service. “If you got somebody new on the street that needs something, we try to make that available to them so they won’t have to sleep on the actual sidewalk,” he said.
The idea for the ministry originated when members of Murray’s home church sought to offer a second service. After their meeting, they would distribute food to people living on the streets in Greensboro. One memorable moment occurred when an elderly woman insisted on paying for a meal, scrounging for 16 cents. This incident inspired the ministry’s name and mission.
Longtime attendee Rodney Dodson shared that people come not only for the food but also for the message from God. “It’s been a wonderful thing to see people come out,” he said.
The ministry aims to expand its efforts and provide more programs to support the Triad homeless community.
