Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, megachurch pastor Landon Schott says voting for a Democrat means one is not a Christian
A Texas megachurch pastor said on Instagram on Monday that people who vote for Democrats are not Christians. Landon Schott, senior pastor of Mercy Culture Church, a multi-campus nondenominational congregation in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, wrote in response to questions he said he had received: “LET ME BE VERY CLEAR… THAT IS CORRECT!!”
In the same post, Schott wrote that “YOU ARE NOT A BIBLE BELIEVING, JESUS FOLLOWING CHRISTIAN IF YOU SUPPORT THE GODLESS ROMANS 1 EVIL OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY!” He called the party “The Demon Party” and described its supporters as “simply a Luke-warm ‘pretend Christian.'” He also wrote, “I’m not a Republican and (there) are evils on both sides,” before asking how a person could be a Christian who biblically supports the party’s “DEMONIC policies.”
According to the church’s LinkedIn page, Schott planted the congregation in 2019. He founded it after receiving a blessing from Robert Morris, the founder of Gateway Church, in 2017. The source describes Morris as “disgraced” and notes that he faced child-sex abuse allegations. The source also says Pastor Tom Lane, a former executive pastor at Gateway Church, claims he had no knowledge of those allegations. Lane now serves as an apostolic elder at Mercy Church. Schott leads the church’s six campuses and eight services, one of which is a Spanish-speaking congregation.
Schott’s remarks came as the Democratic National Convention began in Chicago on Monday. The convention was held to promote Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s potential presidential candidate. Schott cited the party’s positions on abortion, homosexuality and transgenderism as the basis for his statement, and said Democrats “support perversion, idol worship, and child sacrifice.”
Schott also addressed the view that Democrats are the only party concerned with poverty, saying “that’s not true.” He argued instead that “the most devastated cities in America are Democrat cities because their policies don’t work.” He further criticized Black Christians who plan to vote for Harris because they are Black, comparing it to “gay Christians” who put “an identity before your Christianity.” He said he pastors a multicultural, diverse church, and that his role includes “calling out” what he described as the party’s demonic ways.
“I know people don’t like this because most people aren’t pastored, most people aren’t confronted spiritually, and most pastors just care if people show up and give,” Schott said. “I don’t really care if you like me. I don’t care if you go to our church.” He added, “This will be the fall of America; this will be the fall of American Christianity.”
