Doctoral Thesis on AI for Coptic Orthodox Church Services Discussed in Cairo, Egypt
A doctoral thesis on the use of artificial intelligence in the Orthodox Coptic Church was presented at the monastery of St. Marmacis, the apostle and martyr Abseron. The thesis was submitted by Monk Karas Ava Marcos, a monk of the monastery, under the title “Impact of the activation of artificial intelligence applications in the development of the pastoral, educational and social work system of the Orthodox Coptic Church.”
The discussion took place under the auspices of His Holiness the Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, who is also the Supreme Head of the Clinical Institutes and Colleges. Bishop Lucas, head of the Apostolic Monastery of St. Marmacis and St. Abseron, also took part in the event.
The thesis was discussed at the Patriarchal Headquarters of the Cathedral in Abbasiyah on Saturday, 31 October 2026. The event was described as a prominent academic and care event reflecting the continued development of the Church’s service tools.
The research addresses the Church’s work with its people, families and youth. Its focus on services for families and young people reflects work done with care for others (Colossians 3:23). The Orthodox Coptic Church has also been active in scientific research, and the thesis is presented as part of that effort to develop its services.
The project is described as the first of its kind in this field within the Orthodox Coptic Church. It is intended to open the way to using the latest digital technologies and artificial intelligence applications in pastoral work, church education and social services for various groups, especially young people and families.
