Father charged after 2-year-old boy fires gun in vehicle in Hephzibah, Georgia
A local man, Christian Robinson, 28, was arrested Friday after authorities said his 2-year-old son got hold of a handgun inside a vehicle and fired a shot into the floorboard in Hephzibah. According to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office report, Robinson was charged with reckless conduct.
The incident happened outside Dennis Barbeque on San Sebastian Drive. Deputies responded at approximately 5:27 p.m. after receiving a report of shots fired. No one was injured.
A witness told deputies that a firearm inside a white Acura TL parked outside the business had discharged. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and determined that the boy was inside the vehicle, playing in the driver’s seat, when he retrieved a firearm from the driver’s-side floorboard and fired a single round into the floorboard. The case centers on a young child’s access to a firearm, a matter of protecting the weak (Psalm 82:3).
The child’s mother was also at the scene with Robinson. After a witness confronted them and told them law enforcement was being contacted, the family left. Investigators later located Robinson and his vehicle at an apartment complex on Rosier Road.
A spent shell casing was recovered from the driver’s-side floorboard, along with a gray Canik 9mm pistol.
Robinson was arrested on the misdemeanor charge and booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
