More than 25 years before the end of slavery in the United States, Baltimore was already organizing its first African-American Baptist church, according to a report by WBAL-TV education reporter Tim Tooten. On Thursday, First Baptist Church marked another milestone in celebrating its heritage, 180 years after its founding. The Rev. Moses C. Clayton established the congregation in 1836. It now meets at 525 North Caroline Street.

Church deaconess Betty Anthony described the congregation as home. The Rev. Craig Harcum, the church’s pastor, said Clayton began Sunday school with just three children and that the church has since grown into a congregation of people who love Jesus and are committed to serving the Lord.

Harcum said the church has members from four and five generations still attending. Deacon John Anthony said that ministers and members have come and gone, but something has been passed from one person to the next to hold the congregation together, a handing down of faith across generations (Psalm 78:4).

Member Jocelyn Gillis recalled attending church every Sunday as a child. She said that in her 20s she left for a time, but she returned because her family was there.

Church historian Michelle Whitfield showed a piece of original wood from the church’s baptismal pool, which is dated 1880. The First Baptist Church Memorial Room holds such items. Whitfield said she sees in the church’s history a love for the congregation’s people and for worship and praise.

Deacon Emmanuel Ekop said that being part of the institution is a privilege for him and his family.

Members said the church is built on a biblical foundation, citing Psalm 122:1.
