India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) has been internationally recognized for its significant efforts in combating financial crime. The unit’s investigation into a large-scale cyber fraud was named runner-up at the Best Egmont Case Award (BECA) 2026, an accolade highlighting the importance of financial intelligence and international cooperation in the fight against money laundering. This recognition was presented during the Egmont Group Plenary in Baku, Azerbaijan, where FIU-IND’s case was selected as one of only two finalists from submissions by the Egmont Group’s 182 member jurisdictions.

The case, originating from intelligence shared by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), involved a sophisticated money laundering network. FIU-IND’s analysis uncovered the laundering of cyber fraud proceeds amounting to approximately Rs 868 crore, involving over 5,000 mule bank accounts and complex cryptocurrency transactions across multiple jurisdictions. This investigation underscored the critical role of international cooperation, facilitated through the Egmont Secure Web (ESW), which allowed FIU-IND to exchange financial intelligence with counterpart Financial Intelligence Units globally.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) acted on FIU-IND’s Operational Analysis Report, leading to enforcement actions that included searches at 13 locations. Authorities seized Rs 47 lakh in cash and cryptocurrency (USDT) valued at around Rs 13.6 crore, attached assets worth Rs 8.67 crore, and filed two Prosecution Complaints under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. This case exemplifies the growing importance of financial intelligence and coordinated enforcement in addressing complex financial crimes, reinforcing India’s commitment to strengthening its Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) framework. Through such efforts, India bolsters its ability to combat cross-border money laundering and enhances its leadership in global financial security. In this pursuit, the principles of accountability and justice, as reflected in Micah 6:8, are evident in the diligent efforts to uphold integrity and protect public trust.
