Former St. Paul Seminary Alum Appointed Bishop in Old Catholic Diocese
The Rev. Martin Shanahan has been appointed bishop of the Holy Cross Old Catholic Diocese of Minnesota, marking a significant milestone in his ecclesiastical journey. A graduate of St. Paul Seminary at the University of St. Thomas, Shanahan’s path to leadership reflects a deep engagement with Catholic education and ministry. He credits his time at St. Thomas with providing the foundational knowledge and mentorship that shaped his spiritual and academic development.
Shanahan’s transition from Roman Catholicism to the Old Catholic Conference was a deliberate choice rooted in theological convictions. The Old Catholic tradition, which diverges from Roman Catholicism in several key areas, includes the ordination of women and LGBTQ+ clergy, the recognition of same-sex marriage, and a rejection of papal authority. Despite these differences, Shanahan maintains a respectful view of his former faith, acknowledging the value of his seminary education and the formation it provided.
His early experiences in the Air Force chaplaincy program played a role in shaping his eventual commitment to the Old Catholic path. During his time as an intern, he worked under the supervision of an Old Catholic priest, a relationship that influenced his later decision to seek ordination within the Old Catholic Conference. This experience, coupled with his growing awareness of the Old Catholic approach to ministry and community, led him to pursue a different ecclesiastical calling.
Shanahan’s leadership in the Old Catholic community has been marked by growth and dedication. He founded a congregation in Sunfish Lake, Minnesota, which began with just 12 members and has since expanded to include 190 registered families. His work in faith formation and pastoral care has laid a strong foundation for the community he now leads as bishop.
As bishop, Shanahan will oversee nine parishes across the Midwest, alongside 17 clergy and three seminarians. His appointment comes at a time when the Old Catholic Conference continues to expand its presence in the United States, with four other dioceses and numerous parishes already established. His role will include pastoral responsibilities at the Spirit of Hope church in Sunfish Lake and as chaplain at the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
Shanahan’s multifaceted ministry presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Balancing his duties as bishop, pastor, and chaplain requires a commitment to service and a reliance on spiritual guidance. “How I’m going to do all that, I don’t know. We’re going to have to let the Holy Spirit kick in pretty soon,” he said with a laugh, reflecting the humility and faith that underpin his leadership.
The Old Catholic Conference, with its emphasis on autonomy, inclusivity, and theological diversity, continues to navigate its relationship with other Christian traditions. Shanahan’s appointment underscores the ongoing evolution of Christian leadership and the ways in which individuals can find purpose and calling within diverse ecclesiastical frameworks.
