Four Seasons Tower Designed to Blend with Christian Science Plaza in Boston, Massachusetts
The Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences, a 61-story tower in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, was designed with careful attention to its historic surroundings. Located adjacent to the Christian Science Mother Church and the 14-acre Christian Science Plaza, the building stands as Boston’s third-tallest structure. Its design aimed to complement rather than overshadow the area’s architectural heritage, reflecting the Christian Science organization’s broader efforts to reorganize its real estate holdings in the neighborhood since 2006.
The development of the Four Seasons complex began in April 2006, when the Christian Science organization initiated a comprehensive reorganization of its Boston properties. This effort included generating revenue through ground leases with developers, as advised by Leggat McCall Properties. Carpenter & Co. and Pritzker Realty Group were entrusted with developing the Four Seasons property, which now includes the hotel and private residences.
The Christian Science complex in Boston encompasses several landmarks, including the Mother Church, the Brutalist-style administration building at 101 Belvidere St., and a 26-story office tower at 177 Huntington Ave. The plaza also features a 69,000-square-foot reflecting pool. The organization sought to ensure that the new Four Seasons tower would harmonize with these existing structures, according to Gary Johnson, a principal at the architecture firm CambridgeSeven.
Architects from CambridgeSeven and Pei Cobb Freed & Partners implemented design choices intended to respect the historic character of the area. Johnson noted that the building’s triangular form and other elements were crafted to integrate with the surrounding landscape. The project exemplifies a balance between modern development and the preservation of historic landmarks, as emphasized by the Christian Science organization’s planning efforts.
The Four Seasons tower represents a significant milestone in the Christian Science organization’s real estate strategy. By partnering with developers and focusing on design that respects its neighbors, the organization has sought to maintain the integrity of its properties while adapting to the evolving urban landscape. This approach underscores a commitment to thoughtful development that aligns with the values of the community and its historic assets.
