Grand Blanc, Michigan, attack on Latter-day Saint meetinghouse leaves at least four dead
A man drove a car into a Mormon church meetinghouse in Michigan on Sunday while a service was taking place inside, according to reports. He then opened fire with an assault rifle, killing at least four people, and set the building on fire. The man died in a shootout with police.
Hundreds of people were in the meetinghouse at the time, and authorities said there could be more victims. Police said the building had been largely destroyed by the fire, so it had not yet been fully cleared.
William Renye of the Grand Blanc Police said officers were “working tirelessly to find more bodies.” He said emergency crews were recovering and “trying to fight their way through the rubble of the fire.” Families and the community face the grief of an unknown toll, a situation that calls for comfort in grief (Psalm 34:18).
According to police, the shooter was a 40-year-old Marine infantryman and Iraq veteran.
The Michigan incident was the third mass shooting in the United States in just a few hours. Earlier, at least two people had been killed in a shooting in Texas. On Saturday, a 40-year-old Iraq veteran had opened fire in North Carolina, killing three people.
