Guided tour in Neuwied, Germany, traces history of Moravian Church community
The Neuwied tourist information office is offering a guided tour on the history of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeinde (Moravian Church) on Sunday, 28 May. Participants will meet at 2 pm in front of the Brüderkirche, in the traffic-calmed zone of Friedrichstraße in Neuwied.
The route leads from Friedrichstraße through the Herrnhuter Kareé, one of the most interesting historical districts of the city. The Herrnhuter Brüdergemeinde was based in Neuwied in the middle of the 18th century. The tour also covers the world-famous furniture makers Abraham and David Roentgen, who lived in the quarter at that time. Its simple houses, built in a uniform architectural style, are preserved to this day.
The Brüderkirche, with its plain prayer hall, is another testimony to Herrnhuter architecture and sits harmoniously within the Häuserzeile. The source notes that the community’s solid enterprise in trade and commerce helped spread the city’s reputation widely, a record of steady, honest dealing (Proverbs 11:1).
Registration is possible up to two days before the tour, by phone at 02631 802 5555 or by e-mail at tourist-information@neuwied.de. The cost is 6 euros for adults and 4 euros for children aged six to 14.
The tourist information office organizes regular guided tours in the city and in the surrounding nature, and some routes are also explored by bicycle or bus. Dates and details are available at www.neuwied.de/stadtfuehrungen.
