The Salvation Army in Hastings has invited the local community to a celebration marking the reopening of the Citadel after a year-long closure. The event will take place on 31 October, beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2pm. The St Andrews Square community group chair will cut the ribbon, and the Tunbridge Wells Salvation Army Band and Songsters will provide musical entertainment.

Following the ceremony, the Citadel will be open to the public, offering an opportunity to explore the building, meet the Salvation Army team, and enjoy refreshments. The weekend holds special significance as it coincides with the 156th anniversary of The Salvation Army’s presence in the area.

Major Mandy Sands, leader of The Salvation Army in Hastings, expressed enthusiasm for the event. She noted that while the community is pleased the Citadel is open again, awareness of its reopening is still growing. The celebration aims to welcome both long-time supporters and newcomers, emphasizing inclusivity and community connection.

The Citadel was closed for approximately 12 months to carry out essential renovations, including the installation of a new roof, solar panels, and fire doors. During this period, the Sunday congregation attended services at The Salvation Army’s Temple in Old London Road. Volunteers and members stayed connected through regular gatherings, maintaining a sense of community despite the closure.

The reopening marks a new chapter for the historic Citadel, reflecting the organization’s commitment to service and outreach. The event underscores The Salvation Army’s role in providing spiritual and community support, aligning with its mission to serve others through faith and action.
