IDF Conducts Airstrike in Gaza City, Eliminates Senior Hamas Security Official
The Israeli military and the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) announced Tuesday that they had eliminated a senior Hamas official in an airstrike in Gaza City. The individual, identified as Akram Bassam Shaaban Yassin, was part of Hamas’s General Security Mechanism, a covert organization responsible for protecting the group’s leadership.
Yassin held a senior position within the mechanism, which is tasked with safeguarding Hamas leaders, coordinating their movements between safe locations, and gathering intelligence to support the organization’s operations. Senior officials in this structure are also responsible for preparing intelligence assessments, including information about Israeli security forces, to assist Hamas leaders in making operational decisions and planning attacks against Israel.
The IDF stated that Yassin’s elimination followed a series of strikes four months ago that targeted other senior officials within the General Security Mechanism. These operations are part of an ongoing campaign aimed at weakening the mechanism’s capabilities in the Gaza Strip. The military emphasized that Yassin had recently been involved in advancing terrorist attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians.
According to the IDF, Yassin had been attempting to restore Hamas’s military capabilities in systematic violation of the ceasefire. The military stated that the airstrike was conducted to eliminate the threat posed by Yassin and prevent further terrorist activity. Before the strike, the IDF took measures to minimize civilian casualties, including the use of precision munitions and aerial surveillance.
The IDF reiterated that Southern Command forces remain deployed in the Gaza Strip in accordance with the existing agreement and will continue operating against immediate threats. The military concluded that the security forces under the Southern Command remain in the area as stipulated by the agreement and will continue to act against any immediate threat.
