IDF Detains Egyptian National Who Crossed Border Fence Near Nitzana, Israel
An Egyptian national crossed the border fence into Israel near Nitzana overnight, and IDF troops detained him, according to JFeed’s report. The outlet cited Arutz Sheva, which reported that preliminary findings from the Shin Bet investigation show the man was carrying no weapons but had nationalist motives.
Arutz Sheva also reported growing suspicion that the man had intended to carry out a terror attack. Investigators are still examining the circumstances of the incident.
The IDF said its surveillance systems identified the man after he crossed from Egyptian territory into Israel. Soldiers sent to the scene arrested him and handed him to security forces for further questioning. The IDF Spokesperson first announced the arrest and said lookouts had seen the man cross in the Nitzana sector.
“The IDF views the incident with severity and continues to maintain a high level of defensive readiness in the area,” the military said. It added that the incident is under investigation. Careful examination of the facts before conclusions are drawn reflects truth and fairness (Proverbs 18:17).
JFeed noted that the crossing took place along a border where the IDF has been acting against the smuggling of weapons and drugs from Egypt, including smuggling by drone. Citing Ynet, the report said that on August 3, IDF troops and undercover officers arrested two suspects in two separate operations.
In the first operation, troops spotted members of a cell trying to smuggle weapons and drugs. The suspects had a large drone that investigators believe was used to move goods across the border. In the second, forces confiscated an off-road vehicle loaded with a large amount of what appeared to be drugs.
