IDF kills suspect approaching military post in Syria buffer zone
IDF soldiers shot and killed a suspect they identified as attempting to infiltrate an Israeli military post in the southern Syria Security Zone on Sunday night, the military announced. The incident occurred between the villages of Hader and Kuneitra in the buffer zone, where troops from the 2nd “Carmeli” Brigade were stationed.
According to Kan News reporter Itay Blumenthal, security forces initiated a suspect-arrest procedure when they spotted the individual approaching the post. The suspect failed to comply with instructions and climbed an embankment outside the post, prompting the soldiers to open fire and kill him. Blumenthal noted that it remains unclear whether the suspect was armed or whether his actions were indeed an attempt to infiltrate the outpost. Additional troops were sent to the area to conduct searches.
Golan Regional Council Head Ori Kallner warned against allowing threats to reach the border fence, emphasizing the importance of proactive security measures. Speaking on the eve of Simchat Torah, Kallner reminded the public of the lessons learned since October 7, stating, “last night’s attempted infiltration of an IDF outpost in the buffer zone reminds us of one of the crucial lessons we have learned: we do not wait for the threat to reach the fence.” He expressed a commitment to maintaining the IDF’s presence in the region to protect Golan communities.
Kallner also highlighted the necessity of this security doctrine, stating that it is how Israel must continue to operate. He urged all political leaders to commit to preserving this reality in the next government. The IDF’s presence in the southern border area, he explained, allows Israel to safeguard its citizens “far away from the Golan’s communities and residents.”
Syria condemned Israel’s continued “violations” of Syrian territory, as reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). The country accused Israel of establishing a new line of control inside Syria known as the “Sufa 53 Line.” This line runs along part of the 1974 ceasefire line and extends into a buffer zone that existed prior to Israel’s occupation of the area in December 2024, following the fall of the Assad regime.
The IDF has maintained operations in this region, effectively extending its control into the buffer zone. This development has raised concerns about the ongoing presence of Israeli forces in Syrian territory, with Syria accusing Israel of further encroaching on its sovereignty.
