Israeli Delegation Discusses Military Partnership with Somaliland Amid Houthi Threats
Ahmed Dirie, chairperson of the executive committee of the Israel and Somaliland Friendship Association, expressed support for a military partnership between Israel and Somaliland during a visit to Israel. Dirie suggested that an Israeli military presence in Somaliland could help address regional security challenges, particularly against Houthi militants. He emphasized Somaliland’s strategic location near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which he described as critical for regional stability.
Dirie stated that Somaliland’s position in the Horn of Africa makes it a key player in countering threats from the Houthis. He argued that with Israeli assistance, Somaliland could enhance its ability to secure the area. Dirie’s comments reflect a broader interest in strengthening bilateral security cooperation, which has been a topic of discussion in recent months.
In June, Somaliland Defense Minister Mohamed Yusuf Ali told Reuters that there was no Israeli military presence in Somaliland and no ongoing negotiations to establish a base. However, he confirmed that Israel was providing military and police training to Somaliland forces. This indicates a level of collaboration that extends beyond mere diplomatic dialogue.
Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, speaking to The Jerusalem Post, acknowledged that an Israeli military presence had not been discussed but left the possibility open for future cooperation. Abdullahi noted that while current relations are strong, deeper collaboration could lead to a more comprehensive security partnership. He also highlighted the potential for Israeli and American military presence to serve as a deterrent in the region.
Abdullahi further stated that Somaliland does not currently face conflict with the Houthis and that his government has not discussed allowing Israel to use Somaliland territory or airspace for operations against the group. This suggests that while the door remains open for future cooperation, current discussions are focused on training and mutual defense arrangements rather than immediate military deployment.
The potential for a mutual-defense arrangement between Israel and Somaliland underscores the complex interplay of regional security interests. As the relationship develops, it will be important to balance strategic cooperation with the sovereignty and security concerns of all involved parties. Proverbs 18:17 reminds us that justice is the foundation of a just relationship, and this principle should guide the pursuit of peace and security in the region.
