Israeli Opposition Leader Demands Apology from Netanyahu’s Wife Over Oct. 7 Claims
Israeli opposition leader Yair Golan issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife, Sara Netanyahu, demanding an apology and retraction of remarks she made about his alleged knowledge of the Oct. 7, 2023 attack. The dispute arose after Sara Netanyahu told Channel 14 that Golan was in the area near the Gaza Strip during the early hours of the attack. She suggested he was prepared and ready, while others, including the prime minister, were unaware of the unfolding events.
Golan, a reserve major general in the Israeli army and former deputy chief of staff, responded with a legal warning. He stated that failure to apologize within 24 hours would result in a defamation lawsuit seeking damages. In a post on the social media platform X, he outlined the options: an apology and compensation donated to the Nova festival survivors or a lawsuit for 2.5 million shekels ($826,000).
Golan accused Sara Netanyahu of attempting to rewrite the narrative of Oct. 7, labeling her remarks a “false conspiracy.” He claimed she was trying to “turn those who went out to save lives into traitors and those who abandoned Israel’s security into victims.” He vowed to protect the truth and the heroism of the fighters, volunteers, and civilians who acted during the government’s perceived collapse.
If Golan’s party joins the next government, he pledged to establish a state commission of inquiry to investigate the attacks, expose the truth, and identify those responsible for the failure. The conflict highlights the ongoing tensions and accusations within Israeli politics, particularly regarding the handling of the Oct. 7 attack and its aftermath.
The war, which began on Oct. 8, 2023, following Hamas’s cross-border raid, has resulted in significant destruction and loss of life. As of Tuesday, the Gaza Health Ministry reported that Israel’s attacks had killed about 73,462 Palestinians and wounded 174,509 others. The situation remains complex, with ongoing violations despite a ceasefire that has been in effect since Oct. 10, 2025.
