Jamaican Adventist Church Hosts Interdenominational Reggae and Dance-Flavored Charity Concert in Kingston, Jamaica
A Seventh-day Adventist congregation in Kingston, Jamaica, is hosting an interdenominational charity concert that features reggae and dance-inspired gospel music. The event, titled Mission Possible, is organized by Regent Street Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Gospel artist and minister Omari is scheduled to perform at the concert, which is set for this Sunday. According to The Gleaner, the event will take place at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in St Andrew. Reggae and dancehall praise and worship performers Kevin Downswell, Rhoda Isabella, Ryan Davis and Norman Smith are also on the program.
The title refers to the Great Commission in Matthew 28. Organizers acknowledge that the music styles and the interdenominational nature of the event are not typical of Adventist-run productions.
Concert producer Everette Green told The Gleaner that “The Great Commission is to spread the love. The church is too caught up in preaching and teaching. We talk about love, but we are not showing it.” Green said he favors inclusiveness “as long as the Bible does not preach against it.”
An unnamed choir director at Regent Street SDA, also speaking to The Gleaner about the event, said, “We can’t speak about love and be exclusive. You have to be inclusive and open your arms. We have to be able to appreciate that there are others who like other things.”
Proceeds from the event will support outreach and humanitarian projects organized by Regent Street Seventh-day Adventist Church (Isaiah 58:7).
