Kansas Megachurch Advises Kids Ministry Staff to Use Gender-Neutral Terms Instead of ‘Boys and Girls’
Church of the Resurrection, the largest United Methodist congregation in America, has instructed its children’s ministry staff to replace terms like “boys” and “girls” with gender-neutral alternatives. A message obtained by Breitbart News shows the megachurch, led by Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Adam Hamilton, circulated a list of suggested terms such as “peep-a-doodles,” “homo sapiens,” “niblings,” “kiddos,” “kitties,” “comrades,” and “folks.”
The communication, shared in response to a previous discussion about using more inclusive language, includes an image crediting Mila Jam as a source of inspiration. Jam, whose full name is Jahmila Adderley, is an American transgender singer, songwriter, dancer, actress, and LGBTQ activist. She has promoted nonbinary identity and celebrated becoming the “1st Black Trans Artist to co-headline BOSTON PRIDE.”
Hamilton, who is running to unseat Republican Sen. Roger Marshall in Kansas, continues to face scrutiny as voters consider his candidacy. His church has drawn attention for its progressive stances, including its approach to language and inclusivity in ministry.
Hamilton supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, acknowledging his vote for her and contributing $500 to her campaign on July 23, 2024. This occurred just two days after Joe Biden ended his reelection bid. Jam, the LGBTQ activist cited in the children’s ministry guidance, also backed Harris. During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, she praised former first lady Michelle Obama, writing, “Nothing like witnessing the Queen of ‘Do Something’ in person.”
Before the election, Jam shared a photo wearing an early-voting sticker with the caption “Ready for Madame President.” Her advocacy aligns with the megachurch’s broader efforts to embrace inclusive language and practices.
Perhaps most striking to some Christians, Hamilton questioned whether belief in the Virgin Birth is necessary to follow Jesus Christ during an episode of his Making Sense of Faith podcast. He stated, “So I say to people who tell me, ‘I’m not really sure I can believe in the Virgin Birth.’ I’m like, ‘That’s okay. I just want you to follow Jesus.’” The Virgin Birth is affirmed in both the Apostles’ Creed and Nicene Creed, foundational statements of Christian faith.
