For about 50 years, members of the Lafayette Methodist Church in Lafayette, Ohio, have served warm meals as a community tradition on Election Day.

Community members gathered at the church on Tuesday for a spread of soup, salad, sandwiches, and desserts. The annual Election Day luncheon draws visitors from across the area and includes meal deliveries to local businesses and organizations.

This year, donations from the luncheon will go directly to a general community assistance fund that helps area residents who need a little extra help. Rather than designating a single recipient, the church chose to put this year’s proceeds into the fund it uses when community members call or need assistance, mostly for health-related needs because expenses are so high.

Carla Oberly of Lafayette Methodist Church said the whole congregation works together as a united team. “We’re not large in numbers. We’re small, but we’re mighty and reaching out is what we do best,” she said.

Over the past five decades, proceeds from the luncheon have supported numerous Lafayette-area residents, primarily by helping to offset high medical costs.
