Local Nonprofit Helps Former FLDS Members Transition from Abuse to Independence
Warren Jeff’s nephew, Ian, is a former member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He is one of many individuals who escaped abuse in polygamous communities and received support from Holding Out HELP, a nonprofit organization dedicated to aiding those leaving such environments.
Ian, whose last name was withheld, shared his experience on Dr. Phil. At 15, he was expelled from the community for interacting with unapproved friends. His father drove him to Salt Lake City, signed power of attorney to a host family, and left him without further contact. “Essentially, my dad threw me away,” Ian said, describing the emotional devastation of being cast out.
Ian’s account reflects a pattern among some male members of the FLDS. He described being subjected to child labor and eventual excommunication for not adhering strictly to community rules. He recalled being told by Warren Jeff that he was never good enough and would face eternal punishment without his family if he disobeyed.
Holding Out HELP, founded by Tonia Tewell, has provided assistance to numerous individuals like Ian. The nonprofit’s mission is to help those from polygamous cultures transition from isolation to independence. Tewell stated that they serve between 150 and 250 people annually, many of whom arrive with no possessions, lack education, and have endured abuse.
Tewell emphasized that the organization offers food, clothing, shelter, and safety, while also planning for the future through education, job training, and counseling. She recently appeared on Dr. Phil to discuss cases they have worked with and to raise awareness about sex trafficking and pedophilia within certain FLDS sects.
Tewell and her husband began Holding Out HELP after being invited to host a family of six transitioning out of polygamy. They were “shocked by the gravity of what they dealt with,” which motivated them to create the program. Their efforts highlight the complex challenges faced by individuals leaving polygamous communities and the need for support systems to help them rebuild their lives.
