Prosecutors seek harsher sentence and new charge in St. Cloud priest abuse case

Stearns County prosecutors are pursuing an aggravated sentence and an additional charge against Joseph Paul Herzing, a Catholic priest accused of stalking, criminal sexual conduct, and threats of violence against a woman. The case highlights the serious nature of the allegations, which include multiple instances of sexual contact and penetration from 2014 to 2018 while Herzing served as a member of the clergy.

Herzing, 61, of Milaca, is currently facing one count of stalking, one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, and three counts of threats of violence. Assistant Stearns County attorney Jamie Reinschmidt has filed a motion to add another third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge, citing Herzing’s alleged actions during his time in ministry.

The criminal complaint details violent interactions between Herzing and the victim, including choking, physical assault, and threats to kill. These incidents occurred between May 2018 and October 2022, during which Herzing provided spiritual guidance and comfort to the woman in Little Falls and St. Cloud.

Herzing appeared in court virtually for a bond hearing, where conditions were set to restrict his movement and prevent him from engaging in pastoral duties. The case underscores the need for accountability and justice, as the victim’s experiences reflect the gravity of the abuse committed in a position of trust.

Herzing was placed on leave by the Diocese of St. Cloud following the filing of charges in Stearns County court. The bishop’s statement emphasizes the importance of addressing such misconduct within the church community, aligning with the call to protect the vulnerable and uphold moral integrity (Proverbs 31:8-9).
