Reverend Joseph Molitoris, Lutheran Pastor, Dies at 89
Reverend Joseph Molitoris, age 89, of St. Johns, Florida, peacefully passed away on October 24, 2026. A faithful servant of God, devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Joseph lived a life grounded in faith, enriched by family, and distinguished by his genuine love for people.
For 40 years, Joseph devoted his life to pastoral ministry. His calling was more than a profession; it was a way of life. He was a spiritual leader, counselor, teacher, and trusted presence in the lives of countless people.
Joseph was ordained and installed as pastor of his first congregation, the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, on July 15, 1962. He served there until 1968, when he accepted a dual parish ministry at Concordia Lutheran Church in Wooster, Ohio, and St. John Lutheran Church in Mt. Hope, Ohio. In 1970, he became pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Steubenville, Ohio, serving until 1977. His ministry then took him to Valparaiso, Indiana, where he served Heritage Lutheran Church from 1977 to 1986, followed by Prince of Peace Lutheran Church from 1986 until his retirement in 2002.
Throughout his ministry, Joseph remained steadfast in his beliefs. His faith was deeply ingrained, sincere, and unwavering. He freely shared the teachings and convictions that guided his life. For Joseph, faith was never simply something he preached on Sundays; it was the foundation upon which he lived every day.
Even though he was known as Pastor Molitoris to many, the 23 years following his retirement allowed another part of his identity to shine: simply being Dad, Grandpa, and Joe. One of Joseph’s greatest gifts was his love of people. He truly never met a stranger. Wherever he went, he had a remarkable ability to strike up a conversation, often beginning with his favorite question, “Where are you from?” Within moments, he would find a connection, discover a shared experience, or simply make someone feel welcomed. He had a natural curiosity about others and an extraordinary ability to turn an ordinary encounter into a meaningful exchange.
Outside the church, Joseph enjoyed fishing, gardening, landscaping, and wood working. He was known for sharing his wood creations such as bird houses, cardinals, benches, Christmas signs, and many more. He later discovered another way to brighten someone’s day: dad jokes. He delighted in sharing a joke, delivering the punchline, and watching a smile spread (or eyes roll) across someone’s face. Friends and family often marveled at his seemingly endless collection of jokes and his remarkable ability to remember them.
Joseph was preceded in death only three months earlier by his beloved wife, Darleen Molitoris. Together for 64 years, they built a life centered on faith, love, and service.
