Seventh-day Adventist Athlete Wins Gold Medal at Commonwealth Games
Esther Nworgu, a Seventh-day Adventist athlete, made history at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games by winning Nigeria’s first gold medal in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event. The 24-year-old broke two records during the competition, first lifting 118 kilograms (260 pounds) for 114.1 points and later setting a new Games record with a lift of 123 kilograms (271 pounds), securing 119 points and the gold medal.
The president of the Eastern Nigeria Union Conference (ENUC) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Onyebuchi Opara, praised Nworgu’s achievement as a powerful testimony of discipline, perseverance, and dedication. He highlighted her record-breaking performance as a source of honor for Nigeria and joy for the Adventist community across the country and beyond.
Opara emphasized that Nworgu’s success reflects the values upheld by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, including excellence, discipline, humility, and service. He encouraged her to continue being a positive ambassador of Christ through her sporting career, noting that her victory inspires young people and reminds all that challenges do not define one’s destiny.
Speaking after her historic win, Nworgu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nigeria and credited months of preparation, personal sacrifice, and the support of the National Sports Commission for her success. She described the Commonwealth Games as one of the toughest competitions in para powerlifting, requiring maximum effort and determination.
Nworgu also addressed the importance of self-belief for individuals with physical disabilities, stating that disability should never define a person. “Don’t allow people to define you because of your disability,” she said. She urged others to make the best use of their abilities, emphasizing that success is possible through hard work and perseverance.
Her victory aligns with the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s emphasis on using one’s gifts to serve others and glorify God. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, people are to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Nworgu’s story exemplifies these principles through her dedication, resilience, and commitment to excellence.
