Seventh-day Adventists in Zakarpattia Celebrate 100th Anniversary of First House of Prayer Construction
In 1908, John the Captain, while serving in the Austrian army, encountered the Seventh-day Adventist faith and shared its literature with his relatives in Elijah. Upon returning to his home village in 1909, he found a group of individuals who had been studying the Word of God, and they continued to receive Adventist literature through the press. Eventually, they embraced the faith deeply and sought baptism.
By November 1913, the community was officially recognized as a Sister Community of the Austria-Hungarian Missionary Field, becoming a central hub for Adventist activity in the region. This recognition marked a significant milestone in the church’s growth and influence.
In 1921, the first house of prayer was constructed in the province of Illica. On October 2, the Illian community commemorated this historic event with a solemn celebration. The occasion drew many visitors, including well-known pastors, church leaders, and local officials.
Eyewitnesses recounted the journey of building the church, highlighting the dedication of those who constructed it and served the Lord within its walls. A display featuring photographs of ministers from 1912 to the present, along with 3D models of the first and second Milky Houses, was also showcased. The newly established Museum of the Italian Community of the ASSD highlighted the community’s rich heritage and contributions.
The celebration included a choir performing inspired psalms and a stringed orchestra playing Christian songs. A communal meal was also part of the event, reflecting the spirit of fellowship and worship.
Pastors and leaders from various regions gathered to honor the western Adventist community, particularly those who had served in the Illian community throughout their ministries. Their presence underscored the enduring impact of the church’s work in the area.
