Two members of Stanborough Park Seventh-day Adventist Church will take part in sponsored cycle rides to raise funds for STOP International, a charity based in Garston.

STOP founder Kish Poddar, a Garston grandfather who teaches science at Stanborough Secondary School, will make his third London-to-Paris cycle ride with a group of friends during half term. The riders will set off on Sunday and complete the first leg of the journey at Calais. The church’s weekly soup run minibus will serve as their support vehicle, equipped with camping stoves. They will spend nights in local bed and breakfast accommodation before reaching the Eiffel Tower on Thursday.

John Cooper, one of the charity’s twelve trustees, will accompany Kish on the ride for the first time. This year he will also complete the Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle.

STOP International aims to relieve the suffering of orphans by building homes for them and raising financial support. Since it began in 2001, when British volunteers built a chicken enclosure at one orphanage to provide food and income, the charity has completed 20 projects that have helped more than 250 children. Caring for orphans and sharing bread with the hungry reflects a practice of generous giving (Isaiah 58:7).

John also plans to support the Community Chaplaincy Service run by Stanborough Park Church in Watford. The church says the service aims to meet the needs of the local Garston community in whatever form is necessary.

Anyone wishing to sponsor the riders can contact Kish Poddar, STOP International’s founder, or use the charity’s website.
