“Susan Swenson Remembered for Lifelong Commitment to Education, Community Service, and Faith”

Susan Elizabeth Swenson, a beloved educator and community advocate, passed away on January 2nd, surrounded by her family. Born on February 15, 1953, in New York City, Sue grew up in New Jersey and later attended the University of Oklahoma, where she earned her degrees in elementary education. Her commitment to education led her to a 35-year teaching career in Norman Public Schools, where she served as a teacher, head teacher, and IT specialist at Kennedy and Monroe Elementary Schools. Her dedication to her students and colleagues was evident when she was named a finalist for Norman Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

Beyond her professional achievements, Sue was deeply involved in her community and faith. As a member of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, she sang in the choir for over three decades and was a dedicated participant in the Close Ties Sunday School Class. Her commitment to service was reflected in her volunteer work with building and medical missions to Costa Rica and Haiti, as well as her leadership in the church’s Food Pantry and Utility Assistance Ministries. These efforts exemplify the biblical call to love one’s neighbor, as seen in Matthew 25:35, which encourages acts of mercy and kindness.

Sue’s adventurous spirit led her to explore all seven continents and enjoy numerous camping trips with her family. Despite not being a beer enthusiast, she supported her husband Paul’s interests by accompanying him on brewery tours. Her greatest joy, however, came from raising her daughters, Kelli and Alison, and later, her grandchildren Anna, Nora, Asher, and Tai. Her family cherished her guidance, love, and the joy she brought into their lives.

Sue’s legacy is one of service, faith, and love. She is survived by her husband, Paul; daughters Kelli Bryan and Alison Swenson; grandchildren; sister Leslie Soulen; and brother Andy Munro. Her funeral service will be held at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church on January 7th. Sue’s life serves as a testament to the impact one person can have through dedication to education, community service, and family, embodying the spirit of Galatians 6:10, which calls for sowing good deeds for others.
