Warming centers are opening across Southwest Louisiana in response to harsh winter weather, providing temporary shelter and warmth for residents affected by the cold. Local authorities and community organizations are working together to ensure people have access to safe spaces during the extreme conditions.

The Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office is establishing warming centers and stations beginning Saturday, January 24. These locations will open at 8 a.m. and are intended to offer warmth and comfort to those in need. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather and emergency alerts by texting their zip code to 888777 for free Nixle alerts or by downloading the BPSO app.

In Vernon Parish, a warming center will be available in the sheriff’s office lobby starting at noon on Saturday. The center will remain open throughout the inclement weather, offering a place for individuals to seek warmth and shelter. Those using the facility are asked to bring essential items such as medication, snacks, and bedding.

A cold weather shelter is also set to open in the Multi-purpose building at 814 South Lake Arthur Ave. in Jennings. This shelter will be available from 3 p.m. Saturday to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, specifically for residents of Jeff Davis Parish. The facility will not accept pets, and individuals are encouraged to bring their own toiletries and extra clothing.

In Sulphur, the Sulphur Christian Community Coalition (SC3) will open its doors as a warming center starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Lake Charles residents can find warmth and support at Water’s Edge Church, which will serve as a warming shelter beginning at noon on Saturday. The church is also seeking volunteers to help set up the shelter, with sign-ups starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Donations for the Water’s Edge Church shelter are being accepted from January 22, with collection times set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday. Those interested in volunteering or preparing meals for the shelter can contact the church via email at hello@watersedgegathering.com.

These efforts reflect a community commitment to care for vulnerable neighbors during times of need, aligning with the biblical call to protect the vulnerable and show mercy.
