Zanesville, Ohio, Christian and Missionary Alliance Church Plans Two Luminary Walks to Support Salvation Army
The Zanesville Christian and Missionary Alliance Church (CMA) will hold two Luminary Walks in support of the Zanesville Salvation Army, in Muskingum County, Ohio. The walks are scheduled for Sunday, December 19, and Monday, December 20, each running from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Each evening will feature music and about 500 luminaries.
Andy Winters, the lead pastor at the Zanesville CMA Church, said the idea began in the church’s Hope Center, where members meet to discuss ideas. The group looked at community services and organizations and noticed how much the Salvation Army does for the area. “We know that they help out a lot of people, especially during the winter months,” Winters said. “So we saw the opportunity then to come alongside them and maybe produce an event that would draw people to join in and support the Salvation Army.” He said the walk’s purpose reflects the hope of Christ.
Residents can walk the trail while candlelight outlines the path. The trail is about a tenth of a mile long and is suitable for able-bodied walkers. A guide will lead participants along the route.
Admission is one donation to the Salvation Army, which may be given as essential items or as money. Tammy Clark, a member of Zanesville CMA Church, described the organization’s needs. “They are in need of blankets and umbrellas. They are in need of bigger sized clothes like medium, large sweatpants, sweatshirts, socks, gloves, anything that is used for warmth would be a great thing. We’ll also take money and make sure they get that so they can purchase what they need as well,” she said. Opening the walk to all who give, and gathering warm goods for people facing winter, reflects the care for the needy described in Isaiah 58:7.
The Church is located at 545 Richey Road. Organizers said there will also be cookies, hot chocolate and fellowship for those who attend.
