The Unitarian Universalist Association and its affiliated congregations have increasingly positioned abortion access and advocacy as matters of religious freedom. This stance reflects a broader trend among pro-choice faith groups in the United States, where many religious communities are actively supporting abortion rights through fundraising, advocacy, and financial contributions. These efforts challenge the narrative that the anti-abortion religious right represents the majority of faith-based perspectives in the country.

Unitarian Universalist congregations, known for their commitment to social justice and inclusivity, have been part of this movement. Some have directed their collection plates toward abortion advocacy organizations, while others have launched special campaigns to support reproductive rights. The association’s approach aligns with its broader mission of promoting justice, equity, and compassion in human relations, emphasizing the importance of individual conscience and ethical responsibility.

One notable example is the National Council of Jewish Women, which launched the Jewish Fund for Abortion Access in July 2022. By January 2023, the fund had raised over $1 million and provided assistance to nearly 10,000 individuals seeking abortions. This initiative marked a significant shift for the organization, as it focused its resources on a coordinated effort to support abortion access, reflecting a growing emphasis on reproductive justice within Jewish communities.

Catholics for Choice, representing a substantial portion of pro-choice Catholics in the United States, has also increased its financial support for abortion advocacy. The organization reported that approximately 33% of its individual donations are directed toward faith-based abortion funds. These funds operate in states like Ohio and New Mexico, providing critical resources to those in need. The organization’s efforts underscore the role of Catholic social justice teachings in advocating for reproductive rights.

The involvement of Muslim groups further illustrates the diverse range of faith communities supporting abortion access. Organizations like HEART, a Muslim women’s group, have joined the movement, demonstrating that the push for reproductive rights transcends denominational lines. These groups emphasize the importance of protecting the vulnerable and upholding the dignity of all individuals, aligning with core religious values of compassion and justice.

As faith groups continue to engage in these efforts, they highlight the complex interplay between religious beliefs and social action. Their actions reflect a commitment to the principles of justice, mercy, and humble service, echoing the biblical call to “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). This alignment underscores the moral imperative to support those in need and to advocate for policies that protect the rights of all individuals.
