Iran Warns of Global Energy Shock if Israel Strikes Again
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned Wednesday that another Israeli military operation in the Persian Gulf could have severe economic consequences, particularly for global energy markets. In a post on X, he stated that such an offensive could have a “devastating impact” on international markets, with gas producers and consumers directly affected by renewed regional fighting.
Araghchi’s comments came as provisional results from Israel’s parliamentary elections showed Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party leading the race. Netanyahu, who has been backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, has repeatedly warned Iran during his election campaign, arguing that overthrowing its government is the only way to permanently eliminate what he describes as an existential threat to Israel.
Relations between Israel and Iran remain deeply strained following successive rounds of fighting. Israel struck Iran in June 2025, followed by a joint Israeli-American offensive launched in late February 2026. A ceasefire was reached in April after 40 days of bombardment, and Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding in June. However, the fragile truce has since eroded, with diplomatic negotiations at a standstill.
The Iranian foreign ministry has maintained that the outcome of Israel’s elections will not alter Tehran’s position. Previous confrontations have already disrupted global markets and driven up oil and gas prices. Renewed fighting could deepen uncertainty over international energy supplies, potentially leading to a global energy shock.
The situation reflects a broader pattern of escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, with both sides accusing each other of provocative actions. The potential for renewed conflict underscores the fragile state of regional stability and the far-reaching implications for global energy security.
