14-Year-Old Boy in Cirencester, United Kingdom, Spared Custody After Stabbing Girl at Least 10 Times
A judge who spared a 14-year-old boy custody after he stabbed a 14-year-old girl at least 10 times has defended his decision to pursue rehabilitation, according to court transcripts reported by the Daily Mail. The transcripts show that the judge, Ian Lawrie KC, described the boy as a “bright lad.” The boy cannot be identified for legal reasons.
The attack took place inside a convenience store in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, on 15 March 2026. The court heard that the boy had become fixated on the girl after she turned down his romantic advances in December 2025. On the morning of 15 March, he waited near a shop in Cirencester before following her inside. CCTV footage captured him approaching her, grabbing her and repeatedly attacking her with a six-inch kitchen knife as she tried to escape.
A shopkeeper who tried to stop the assault was struck in the back with the knife. The girl managed to get out of the store and raise the alarm at a nearby property.
Judge Lawrie acknowledged serious concerns about the boy’s behaviour, including his decision to carry a knife, the apparent planning involved and the level of violence captured on CCTV. He also considered the boy’s age, family circumstances and prospects for rehabilitation. The judge described a supportive home environment, indicated that custody would be a last resort, and expressed a preference for a sentence designed to provide supervision and support.
When the boy was sentenced in September, he received a 12-month referral order and a three-year restraining order. The victim’s mother has condemned the punishment, saying her family feel badly let down by the justice system. The judge’s remarks have attracted renewed attention since that criticism. Her family’s complaint about the outcome bears on how the vulnerable are protected (Psalm 82:3).
After the attack, the boy spent approximately three months at Vinney Green, a secure children’s facility in South Gloucestershire. During a hearing in June, Judge Lawrie expressed dissatisfaction with the boy’s placement in secure accommodation.
