No Charges Expected in Alleged Abuse Cases at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Daycare in Elkin, North Carolina

Elkin Police confirmed an abuse investigation involving two separate incidents at a daycare in Elkin, in Surry County. A report from WXII12.com, published in December 2024, placed the daycare on Business Highway 268 and said the incidents occurred on December 15 and December 22. A separate report from Reflector.com identified the facility as Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Daycare and described both incidents as alleged. Officials have not released details of what occurred.

Both reports say one suspect is under investigation. The WXII12 report said the individual had been removed from their position at the daycare. The Reflector report said Police Chief Joey Vanhoy confirmed the person had been terminated. The suspect has not been named because no charges have been formally filed.

The Reflector report said the Elkin Police Department received reports of the incidents on January 7, 2025. It said the investigation involved assistance from the Surry County Department of Social Services and the Surry County District Attorney’s office. The WXII12 report said the Surry County Department of Social Services had received abuse reports but does not investigate daycares, and that it forwarded the report to the state for further action. The two reports describe the social services agency’s role differently, and the sources do not reconcile those accounts.

The reports also differ on the status of charges. The WXII12 report said police had not yet filed charges and would present the completed investigation to the district attorney’s office, with investigators planning to do so on a Monday. The Reflector report said the detective handling the case presented evidence to the District Attorney’s office on January 12 and that no charges are expected. Neither report describes a court decision or outcome.

Removing a staff member from contact with children is one concrete step in protecting those in care (Proverbs 31:8-9). Pastor Danny Dodds acknowledged the termination but declined to provide further details, according to the Reflector report. The daycare continues to operate.
