Alberta’s Education Minister Adriana LaGrange’s office has granted exemptions allowing Hutterite colony and Mennonite schools to continue in-person classes despite the province’s decision to transition most schools to at-home learning. This exception ensures continuity of education for these communities, which face unique challenges in adapting to online learning.

The minister’s press secretary, Nicole Sparrow, explained that the exemptions were made to support learning in specific circumstances. She noted that students with disabilities and pre-kindergarten programs across the province can remain open. Hutterite colony and Mennonite schools were included due to their lack of the necessary technology and equipment for remote learning.

Sparrow emphasized that schools granted exemptions must adhere to public health protocols, including those in Mennonite schools and on Hutterite colonies. If a COVID-19 case is detected, school operations will be reviewed by the relevant authorities. The exemptions were previously applied during the early stages of the pandemic and have been reaffirmed based on feedback from school divisions.

As of November 2020, there were 3,662 Hutterite students in 194 Alberta schools. This year, 32 out of 58 Mennonite schools have provided data, with 3,556 students enrolled. A school must demonstrate a significant proportion of Mennonite students to qualify for the exemption. The ministry expects most eligible schools to take advantage of this option.

Several schools in the Fort Vermilion School Division in northwest Alberta will remain open for in-person classes. The decision reflects the province’s recognition of the distinct needs of these communities and their educational systems. The exemptions highlight the importance of addressing the specific circumstances of different groups to ensure equitable access to education.
