The Assyrian Church of the East Council, convening in Arbel, North Iraq, has postponed the election of a new Patriarch to September 16. This decision follows the rescheduling to allow reconciliation talks between the Assyrian Church of the East (ACE) and the Ancient Church of the East to conclude. The two churches, which split in the mid-1960s over the Gregorian Calendar issue, have engaged in substantive dialogue on reunification, with expectations of finalizing the process before the election.

The Ancient Church of the East, despite its name, emerged as a splinter group from ACE in the mid-1960s. ACE adopted the Gregorian Calendar, while some members, supported by the Iraqi government, remained loyal to the Julian Calendar, leading to the formation of the Ancient Church of the East. The ongoing dialogue suggests a potential path toward unity, with the possibility of Ancient Church of the East bishops participating in the election.

The council meeting also addressed the plight of Assyrians and other minorities in Iraq and Syria. It condemned war and violence, highlighting the humanitarian crisis affecting these regions. The Assyrian Church of the East expressed gratitude to the Lebanese government and the Kurdish Regional Government in northern Iraq for their assistance in managing the crisis. The church also offered prayers for kidnapped Assyrians in Syria and called for their immediate release.

The council acknowledged the challenging circumstances faced by Assyrians and other minorities, emphasizing the need for peace and stability. It called for an end to persecution and violence, urging all parties to work toward a just and equitable resolution. The Assyrian Church of the East reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the vulnerable and upholding the dignity of all people.

In its statement, the council emphasized the importance of reconciliation and unity among Christian communities. It recognized the role of local governments and international actors in addressing the ongoing humanitarian challenges. The Assyrian Church of the East continued to advocate for the rights of Assyrians and other minorities, calling for justice and accountability in regions affected by conflict.

The postponement of the Patriarch election reflects the church’s prioritization of dialogue and reconciliation. It underscores the Assyrian Church of the East’s commitment to addressing both internal and external challenges. The church remains focused on its mission of service, charity, and the protection of its communities, even in the face of adversity.
