Bearing Fruit as Branches of Christ the Vine
The devotional “Bearing Fruit” by Andrew Murray uses the image of the vine and its branches to describe the Christian life. The post explains that a branch exists for one purpose: to carry fruit that the vine produces. Just as the vine’s life flows through the branch into the grape, the believer receives life from Christ and serves as the means by which Christ bears fruit in the world.
Murray describes the Christian as a branch of Christ, the heavenly Vine, whose whole aim is to let Christ work through him. The author sees this devotion to bearing fruit as directed toward the glory of God. He connects this way of living with prayer: when a believer remains in Christ and lets Christ’s words rule the heart, there is grace to pray as we ought and faith to receive what is asked.
The post also points out a common temptation. People tend to treat the promises Jesus gave in his farewell discourse as too large to take at face value, reshaping them to fit ordinary expectations and detaching them from the devoted life of service they were meant to support. Murray presents God’s covenant as a simple exchange of giving all and receiving all.
According to the post, a person who is willing to be nothing more than a branch of Christ will be given freedom to claim Christ’s riches in their fullness, along with the wisdom and humility to use them well.
