Chaldean Patriarch Mar Paul III Nona Meets Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi Ahead of Enthronement Ceremony
Mar Paul III Nona, the newly elected Patriarch of the Chaldean Church, welcomed Iraq’s Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi at the Patriarchal headquarters in Baghdad on Tuesday. The meeting took place ahead of Nona’s official enthronement ceremony, scheduled for 29 May 2026. Al-Zaidi’s visit was intended to extend his congratulations to Nona following his election as Patriarch.
During their meeting, al-Zaidi conveyed his hopes that God would grant Nona wisdom and strength in fulfilling his pastoral duties. He highlighted the significance of collaboration between the government and the Christian community, expressing his commitment to offering all necessary support and services.
Patriarch Nona reciprocated the Prime Minister’s visit by congratulating him on his new role and the formation of the government. He underscored the importance of maintaining Iraq’s religious and communal diversity, describing it as a national treasure that fosters mutual understanding among different groups.
The two leaders also addressed the country’s ongoing challenges, particularly the impact of conflicts that affect all communities. Nona, alongside several bishops, shared the difficulties faced by Christians in Iraq. He called for increased investment opportunities, especially for those living abroad, noting that “Today’s world is driven by the economy, not politics.”
The Chaldean Church, which follows the Syriac rite in its prayers, liturgy, and religious feasts, continues to play a vital role in the spiritual and cultural life of its communities. The Patriarch’s visit with the Prime Minister reflects the ongoing dialogue between religious leaders and the government on issues of mutual concern.
In a separate development, the Federation of Syriac Associations (SÜDEF) in Turkey and a Swiss-based aid organization have been engaged in efforts to support Syriac communities. These initiatives highlight the broader challenges and opportunities facing Syriac Christians in the region.
