Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Miami’s oldest Black church established in 1895, has long served as a cornerstone of the Coconut Grove community. Beyond its role as a place of worship, the church has expanded its mission to support the educational needs of children, offering after-school and summer programs that have helped generations of students improve their academic performance.

Parent Tashareaya Richards found the church’s after-school tutoring program instrumental in helping her daughter, Jelaine, overcome challenges in math. Richards, who participated in the church’s After School Tutoring and Enrichment Program, or A-STEP, as a child, credits the church’s Macedonia Community Outreach Ministries summer program for not only boosting her daughter’s grades but also fostering her award-winning orating skills. The programs provide a supportive environment where children feel motivated to excel.

The church’s commitment to education has led to increased demand for its services. The after-school program was initially launched in 1985 to assist students at risk of academic failure. However, after the departure of its educational director, the church shifted focus to offering tutoring on a case-by-case basis while maintaining its summer program. The summer program continues to play a vital role in addressing educational needs and nurturing young talent.

To meet growing demand, the church is pursuing an expansion project that includes constructing additional classroom space. The church has secured a $397,000 grant from the city of Miami and is awaiting permits to begin construction. The total cost of the addition is just under $1 million, with the goal of breaking ground in January and completing the project in time for the 2025 summer program.

The initiative reflects the church’s ongoing dedication to serving the community through education and outreach. As the church continues to invest in its programs, it remains a vital institution for both spiritual and academic support in Coconut Grove.
