The Salvation Army of Decatur, Illinois, has launched its annual Christmas campaign with a goal of raising $600,000 to support families and individuals in need throughout Macon County.

This year’s campaign is themed “Ring for Good,” and it encourages community members, businesses, churches and organizations to give back during the holiday season. Money raised through donations, fundraising events, mail appeals and the organization’s Red Kettles will support Salvation Army programs throughout the year.

In a message to supporters, Majors Randall and Susan Summit, who lead the Decatur Salvation Army, wrote: “While meeting human needs is always our mission, this theme encourages us to let love, happiness and the GOODNESS of giving be the driving force behind all we do.”

The organization provides a range of services, including a food pantry, a men’s emergency shelter, homelessness prevention assistance and help with prescription costs. It also operates its Pathway of Hope program, which works with families to break the cycle of poverty through case management and support services. Feeding those who come to the food pantry reflects the charity and hospitality of Matthew 25:35.

During the colder months, the organization offers 20 “Cold Cots” through its emergency shelter. The cots provide a warm and safe place for men experiencing homelessness who may not be ready to take part in the shelter’s regular program. The Salvation Army also partners with Supportive Services for Veteran Families to help local veterans with housing stability and case management.

The Summits wrote that the campaign aims to “share love and restore hope by providing food, toys, and support to families in need this Christmas,” adding, “But our commitment doesn’t end there.”

The Red Kettle campaign begins November 6 at several locations throughout Decatur. Bell ringers will begin collecting donations at Hobby Lobby in Hickory Point Mall, Blaine’s Farm & Fleet, and four select Walgreens locations. The Salvation Army is asking individuals, families, churches, businesses and community groups to volunteer as bell ringers.

Volunteers can sign up for half-day shifts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 2 to 8 p.m., or for a full-day shift from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Groups may divide shifts among several volunteers, allowing participants to rotate every hour or two. The Salvation Army will provide the bells, aprons and kettles, and volunteers are encouraged to dress in festive clothing and help spread Christmas cheer.
