Edmund Kell Unitarian Church Under Investigation Over Missing £290,000
The Edmund Kell Unitarian Church and Elizabeth Kell Community Hall in Southampton are under investigation by the Charity Commission after nearly £300,000 is found unaccounted for. The inquiry was initiated in April 2025 when the charity’s trustees applied to change its structure. During this process, concerns emerged about the charity’s governance and administration.
A review of the charity’s accounts and investment portfolio revealed discrepancies, prompting the regulator to escalate its involvement to a formal inquiry. The commission is now assessing whether the trustees have fulfilled their legal duties and responsibilities, including oversight of financial management and the potential loss or misappropriation of funds.
The inquiry will also examine safeguarding practices and potential risks linked to a connected individual. The Charity Commission has the authority to investigate excepted charities like this one, which are not required to register but still must comply with charity law. The commission may expand the scope of the inquiry if additional regulatory issues surface.
The charity, which describes itself as a “compassionate, inclusive, spiritually diverse, faith community,” operates a hall available for hire. The venue hosts a variety of community events, including Trans Pride gatherings, dance classes, Narcotics Anonymous meetings, and social functions. These activities reflect the congregation’s commitment to community engagement and inclusivity.
The Charity Commission will publish a report detailing the findings, actions taken, and the inquiry’s outcomes once it concludes. The inquiry underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in charitable organizations, aligning with the biblical call to “do justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). As the investigation unfolds, the community and regulatory bodies will await the results to ensure responsible stewardship of charitable resources.
