EYN Reports Progress on Brethren University of Nigeria Construction Despite Adamawa Attacks
The Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, known as Ekklesiyar ‘Yan’Uwa A Nigeria (EYN), continues to advance its development initiatives despite ongoing security challenges. Among these efforts is the construction of Brethren University of Nigeria (BUN), a project aimed at expanding educational opportunities within the community. The university is being built on a 236.9-hectare site in Muchala, Gombi Local Government Area, where land acquisition has been finalized at a cost of N300 million. The main gate and perimeter fence are currently under construction, with the ground-breaking ceremony already completed.
Rev Daniel Mbaya, the EYN president, highlighted the church’s resilience in the face of persistent threats from Boko Haram insurgents. He noted that the church has been significantly impacted by the insurgency, with over 70 local church councils displaced and many members abducted or killed. Despite these losses, the EYN remains committed to its mission of service and development.
During the 2026 General Church Council meeting, held at the EYN headquarters in Kwarhi, Adamawa State, Mbaya emphasized the rising frequency of attacks on church branches. He stated that the number of displaced churches increased from below 40 in 2024 to over 70 by the end of 2025. He urged greater awareness of the ongoing violence, noting that many Nigerians remain unaware of the severity of the insurgency’s impact.
The General Church Council, also referred to as Majalisa, was a four-day event that concluded over the weekend. It brought together pastors from across the country and featured high-profile guests, including the Archbishop of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, Most Rev Panti Musa. The LCCN spiritual leader offered prayers for the EYN, seeking divine grace to help the church cope with its losses and continue its work.
The EYN’s efforts reflect a broader commitment to community development and education, even amid significant challenges. The construction of BUN underscores the church’s dedication to providing resources and opportunities for its members and the wider community. As the project progresses, it serves as a testament to the church’s perseverance and determination to foster growth and stability in the face of adversity.
