Fire Destroys Thousands of Toys at Northeast Ohio Salvation Army Warehouse
A fire at a Salvation Army warehouse in Northeast Ohio destroyed thousands of toys intended for hundreds of children in the Cleveland area. The incident occurred over the summer at a storage unit where the Salvation Army kept toys collected throughout the year. Approximately 2,000 toys, valued at around $30,000, were lost in the blaze, which had been earmarked for about 1,000 children in the region.
Captain Joel Ashcraft, Area Commander for The Salvation Army in Greater Cleveland, described the loss as “a devastating loss for our community.” The Salvation Army is now facing a significant challenge in meeting its goal of providing toys to more than 6,500 children this Christmas. The organization needs 15,000 toys in total to fulfill its seasonal needs across Cuyahoga County.
Nate Berkey, Donor Relations Director for The Salvation Army in Greater Cleveland, highlighted the urgent need, noting that Cleveland has the highest child poverty rate of any large city at 51%. “This isn’t just a ‘man this would be really nice,’” Berkey said. “This is a – Cleveland is in need, and kids in Cleveland are in need.”
Despite the setback, the Salvation Army remains committed to its mission of providing gifts to children in need. The organization aims to keep this year’s efforts similar to last year’s, when it successfully provided toys to over 6,000 children across the region. “Kids all over Northeast Ohio can have a day where they receive something,” Berkey said. “That really makes a difference.”
The Salvation Army is particularly in need of high-quality toys priced between $20 and $30. “Every child deserves to feel that excitement on Christmas morning by seeing toys wrapped under the tree,” Ashcraft said. The organization continues to seek donations and support to fulfill its holiday campaign.
