Former Newburgh Catholic Priest Arrested for Allegedly Stealing from Parish
A former Newburgh Catholic priest has been arrested and charged with grand larceny following an investigation into allegations of financial misconduct. Fr. William Damroth, who previously served as a pastor in several Catholic parishes across New York, was under investigation since 2022 for allegedly stealing money from St. Mother Theresa’s Parish in Newburgh. The archdiocese recently informed parishioners of the charges, stating Damroth has been placed on a leave of absence.
The archdiocese’s Vicar for Clergy, Edmund J. Whalen, conveyed the news in a letter to parishioners, expressing sorrow over the situation and urging prayers for those affected. The investigation reportedly began after discrepancies were discovered during an audit following Damroth’s reassignment to Immaculate Conception parish in Port Jervis in July 2022. The archdiocese has not disclosed the specific amount of money allegedly stolen.
Damroth, who was ordained in 1993, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office has indicated the case will be presented to a grand jury for further proceedings. News 12 attempted to contact state police for additional details but received no response.
The case highlights the importance of transparency and accountability within religious institutions, as emphasized in Proverbs 31:8-9, which calls for speaking up for the oppressed and defending the rights of the vulnerable. While the legal process continues, the archdiocese has reiterated its commitment to addressing the situation with care and integrity.
