Christmas shopping season is getting underway in Carson Valley. St. Gall Catholic Church hosted its Christmas Boutique last weekend, and two more holiday events in Gardnerville this weekend will support community charities.

The Young At Heart Senior Citizens Club is holding its annual Holiday Craft Fair from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center in Gardnerville. The fair is described as the biggest free indoor craft fair in Carson Valley, with more than 100 vendors from around the region offering handmade crafts, raffle prizes and food. Parking is free. Organizers said that “all proceeds go to support our local soup program and other services for senior citizens in Douglas County.” Information is available from Kathryn Clark at 775-267-4675.

The Carson Valley United Methodist Church, through its United Women in Faith group, is hosting the Heavenly Holiday Market from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. The source describes the market as a more than 40-year Carson Valley tradition.

Chairwoman Sharon Calvert said the event “takes dozens of church artisans, volunteers, sponsors and helpers to make it a success every year.” She said church members and friends have spent the year making handmade decor, jewelry, knit and crocheted wear and a range of gift items, and have spent months collecting raffle baskets and silent auction items. Profits support women’s and children’s charities and missions locally and around the world. Calvert said more than $14,000 was raised in one day last year for more than 20 charities and missions, a model of generosity toward those in need (Hebrews 13:16). More information is available at carsonvalleyumc.com.

Separately, Young At Heart Senior Citizens Club members are collecting donations through November for holiday gift bags for homebound seniors. Last year the club gathered enough to fill 350 bags, and that is this year’s goal.

Donations may be dropped off at both sides of the Douglas County Community & Senior Center. On the senior side, at 1329 Waterloo Lane, items may be brought from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend drop-offs are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the recreation side. Suggested items include body and cleansing wipes, dental floss, deodorant, tissues, hairbrushes, combs, hand cream and lotion, lip balm, personal hygiene products, blankets, socks, batteries, calendars, pens, activity books and playing cards.
