IPHC Leader Claims ‘Nothing to Hide’ Amid Ongoing Fraud Probe
The leader of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church (IPHC) Jerusalem, Michael Sandlana, visited the Sandton police station in Johannesburg to address ongoing fraud allegations tied to his personal estate dispute with his estranged wife, Benedicta Sandlana. The matter involves claims that a death certificate was issued falsely to facilitate the transfer of church property to Sandlana’s personal estate.
An IPHC Jerusalem spokesman, Vusi Ndala, stated that the allegations stem from a complaint filed by Benedicta Sandlana and her legal advisors, Arnold Joseph Attorneys. Ndala emphasized that Sandlana, known as the “comforter” within the IPHC, had nothing to hide and had been a prominent public figure in South Africa for years. He noted that the fraud case was opened at the Sandton police station, alleging that Sandlana had a role in the death certificate, which was issued by the national department of home affairs.
Ndala argued that the allegations were part of a broader effort to discredit Sandlana amid a leadership battle within the IPHC. He claimed the accusations were being used to undermine Sandlana’s position and that the connection between the church leader and the state department was unfounded. The church, which has a three-million-member congregation in South Africa and neighboring countries, has been embroiled in a contentious leadership struggle since the death of its founder, Frederick Samuel Modise, in 1998.
The conflict has intensified as Glayton Modise, who inherited the church from his father, faces competition from his two sons, Frederick Leonard Goitsemang and Tshepiso, as well as other factions. The ongoing legal and personal disputes have drawn significant media attention, with Sandlana’s personal affairs now at the center of the controversy. The situation highlights the complex dynamics within the church, where leadership and personal matters often intertwine.
The IPHC, a prominent Pentecostal denomination, has faced internal challenges that reflect broader tensions within charismatic Christian movements. These include leadership succession, financial management, and the balance between personal conduct and public ministry. The case involving Sandlana underscores the potential for personal disputes to impact institutional stability and public perception.
The allegations against Sandlana raise questions about transparency and accountability within religious institutions. As the church navigates these challenges, the outcome of the fraud probe could have significant implications for its leadership and governance. The situation serves as a reminder of the need for integrity and clarity in both personal and institutional matters. Micah 6:8 calls for justice, mercy, and humility, principles that should guide the actions of church leaders and their congregations.
