Iran Reports Plan to Target Underwater Internet Cables in Persian Gulf

Iran has reportedly prepared an attack plan targeting underwater internet cables in the Persian Gulf, according to a report by Reuters, citing two unnamed sources. The plan includes efforts to disrupt the restoration of damaged networks and hinder the continuity of interconnected lines, including Internet access. The sources indicate that Iran would not hesitate to attack underwater cables and military bases if it faces another attack.

The report suggests that the potential impact of such an attack could affect seven major internet cables under the Ormus Strait. Damage to these cables could lead to slowed internet services, disrupted financial operations, and complications in cloud computing. Countries in the Persian Gulf and major U.S. technology companies are reportedly investing in additional land and underwater communication routes to enhance stability.

The report also mentions that Israel had planned a major military operation against Iran but delayed it due to the stance of then-President Donald Trump, who opposed such attacks ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. This delay highlights the complex interplay between military strategy and political considerations.

The sources emphasize that Iran’s actions are part of a broader strategic posture, reflecting its determination to challenge perceived threats and assert its regional influence. The potential for cyber and physical attacks on critical infrastructure underscores the escalating tensions in the region.

The report serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities in global communication networks and the potential consequences of geopolitical conflict. It also highlights the importance of maintaining stable and secure infrastructure to support both national and international operations.
