Israel Assesses Renewed Fighting with Iran Likely, US Strike Possible Within Days, Reports Say
The two reports describe a possible renewed round of fighting with Iran, with the first focusing on Lebanon and the second on Iran and Gaza. According to Report 1, from maariv.co.il, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) assess that if fighting occurs, Hezbollah will act and try to attack targets in Israel and IDF forces in Lebanon. The military is preparing for that possibility, with large-scale reserve call-ups to begin immediately for fighting in Lebanon, and the IDF was on a high state of alert as of Sunday evening.
Report 1 states that Israel assesses there is no escape from another round of fighting against Iran. It says the stated goal of such fighting would be significantly weakening the Iranian regime and harming its nuclear capabilities and military buildup. The report says the IDF believes the US military will be ready to strike within a period of days, perhaps more. Citing defense establishment officials, it adds that Donald Trump would have a one-month window of transition between the two houses of Congress if he loses the midterm elections, and that officials expect he could act freely during that month, including against the Iranian threat.
Report 2, from ua.news and citing the Jerusalem Post, offers a different framing of the timing. It says Israeli defense officials estimate that Iran, in its economic crisis, will not agree to a full nuclear program or to stop ballistic missile production. Israeli officials, according to the report, believe Tehran is deliberately delaying negotiations on the eve of American elections to buy time. Where Report 1 ties the opportunity to a loss of the congressional majority, Report 2 says the US and Israel have reportedly prepared plans to restore strikes on Iran after the midterm elections. Report 2 also says the U.S. Central Command is reportedly preparing for a possible impact on Iran.
Report 2 includes further claims about the military picture. It states that Israel has more than 3,000 U.S. military officers and that no dramatic increase in American military planes has been observed in the previous week. That observation differs from Report 1’s assessment that US forces would be ready to strike within days, perhaps more. Report 2 also says that after the midterm elections, the White House can reportedly restore pressure on Jerusalem to create a Palestinian city on the ruins of Rafah, with financing expected from the United Arab Emirates. Neither report establishes that any of these plans will be carried out. Honest dealing matters when claims about stalled talks are weighed (Proverbs 11:1).
On Gaza, Report 2 says the Israeli military continues work in the south of the Gaza region to locate weapons, explosives, and infrastructure. It attributes to the South District Command of Israel the belief that Hamas does not intend to disarm, and reports that the Israeli military is therefore preparing for a land invasion of Gaza City.
