Jewish charity reports 21% rise in UK antisemitism since Iran war outbreak

In the wake of the US-Israel war on Iran, antisemitic incidents in the UK have surged, according to a Jewish charity. The Community Security Trust (CST) reported a 21% increase in anti-Jewish hate incidents during the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Mark Gardner, CST’s chief executive, emphasized that these attacks are not only directed against British Jews but also represent a broader threat to British society. The rise in violence has prompted calls for greater vigilance and protection for the Jewish community.
Between January and June 2026, the CST documented 1,926 incidents, including assaults, arson attacks, and the tragic stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green, a London suburb with a long-established Jewish population. This incident marked the second-highest total for the first half of any year, highlighting the severity of the situation. The attack led to a significant increase in daily antisemitic incidents, with 71 reported in the three days following the stabbing. Some of these incidents directly referenced the attack, with some even celebrating the violence and promoting antisemitic conspiracy theories.
A little-known group linked to Tehran, the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right (HAYI), has claimed responsibility for seven attacks. In March, four ambulances belonging to Hatzola, a Jewish charity providing ambulance services, were torched in Golders Green. In response, the UK government sanctioned HAYI in July, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the Jewish community. The UK government also accused members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) Qods Force of being behind the attacks, citing threats to life and intimidation on UK soil.
The CST noted that antisemitic incidents have risen sharply since the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered Israel’s war on Palestinian militants in Gaza. Policing minister Sarah Jones described the latest figures as “appalling,” stressing the need to continue fighting against this evil. She announced a record £250 million investment to enhance policing in Jewish neighborhoods, underscoring the government’s resolve to address the issue.
The situation reflects a complex interplay of global tensions and local community safety. As the CST and other organizations work to combat antisemitism, the call for justice and accountability remains paramount.
