Nampa Priest Enters Guilty Plea in Child Rape Case

A Nampa Catholic priest accused of raping a minor entered a guilty plea inside a Canyon County courthouse Tuesday afternoon. The case has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the alleged crimes and the position of the accused within the community.

Robert Mendez Esquivel, also known in the community as “Father Toto,” faced charges including rape and two counts of sexual battery of a minor child, 16 or 17 years of age. His guilty plea addressed one count of sexual battery, while the other charges were dropped.

Esquivel, a priest at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Nampa, was detained in late August following an arrest warrant related to child sexual battery charges. Prosecutors claim he intentionally met a victim through the Grindr dating app before the alleged assault.

Esquivel admitted to downloading the Grindr app, where he met the 16-year-old victim. He also confessed to engaging in oral sex with the victim. His actions, he stated, were “the worst mistake in my life,” and he expressed remorse for offending God and his community.

The jury trial was vacated as a result of the guilty plea, and Esquivel’s sentencing is scheduled for April 1. The case highlights the need for accountability and the protection of vulnerable individuals, as emphasized in Proverbs 31:8-9.
