Nazarene University hosted the 2024 Nazarene Student Leadership Conference, themed “Better Together,” from April 4 to 6. The event brought together student leaders from eight universities within the North American Nazarene higher education network. Dr. Ron Jackson, former professor and director of The Call at MNU, served as the keynote speaker. The conference aimed to foster team development, idea sharing, and goal setting for each campus, while promoting camaraderie among student leaders.

Lisa Downs, director of student life at MNU, emphasized the value of the conference in broadening students’ understanding of the Nazarene higher education network. “Some of these students may not realize there’s a broader scope with seven other universities,” she said. “It gives the teams a chance to start thinking about what they’d like to see happen as leaders on their campuses and get to know their counterparts for future collaboration and support.”

The conference included a variety of activities beyond formal meetings, such as experiencing MNU’s traditions and local attractions. Attendees enjoyed spicy chicken Thursday in the cafeteria, a hoedown at the Mahaffie Stagecoach and Farm, chapel services, and an Improv performance. They also had the opportunity to explore Kansas City’s best BBQ, attend a KC Royals game, and visit the Kansas City Zoo.

“Togetherness is one of the biggest benefits of NSLC,” Downs said. “Every time, something comes out of those discussions about what we want to do for our campus in the coming year.”

Each year, the Nazarene Student Leadership Association honors a student and a faculty or staff member from the host university. This year, MNU selected Senior McKenna Clements for the Clayton J. Meyer Silent Servant Award. Clements was recognized for her involvement in various aspects of student life, including roles as a resident assistant and participant in performing arts and spiritual life activities.

Dr. Ron and Sharon Jackson were honored with the Charles K. Morrow award for their servant leadership at MNU. In addition to their roles on the faculty and directing The Call at MNU, the Jacksons have accompanied students on 40 mission trips over 25 years.

For nearly 60 years, student leaders from North American Nazarene colleges have gathered on a sister school’s campus for the Nazarene Student Leadership Conference. This year, MNU provided training, chapel services, activities, and collaboration opportunities for student governments from eight universities.
