The Assyrian Church of the East in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood faces community opposition as it seeks to expand its parking lot by demolishing a neighboring house. The Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, headquartered at Mar Gewargis Cathedral, has proposed the project to address parking challenges for its congregation and alleviate traffic congestion in the area. The plan involves rezoning a vacant single-family home at 1530 W. Touhy Ave., a move that has sparked debate among local residents.

This is the second time the church has pursued a similar expansion. Ald. Maria Hadden (49th) is reviewing the proposal, having held a community meeting on Sept. 26 to discuss the plan with neighbors and the church. Opponents argue the project would “diminish the quality and character of the neighborhood, change the streetscape and lead to more traffic congestion,” as stated in a petition against the rezoning. The concerns highlight the tension between the church’s needs and the community’s preservation of its historic character.

The Assyrian Church of the East, one of the oldest Christian denominations, has been based in Rogers Park since the early 1980s. Khanania Dinkha IV, the church’s leader, relocated the seat of the church from Iraq to St. George’s Cathedral following the Assyrian diaspora that settled in Chicago. The cathedral remains a central hub for the Assyrian community, anchoring a network of four other parishes across the city and its suburbs. It has also served as a gathering place for thousands during significant events, such as Dinkha’s funeral services in 2015.

The proposed expansion has drawn mixed reactions from parishioners. While some see the project as a necessary step to accommodate growing congregations and ease parking difficulties, others express concern over the loss of a century-old home. The church’s current parking lot is already full, with many parishioners driving from as far as the northern suburbs. Some rely on shuttle buses to transport them between the school parking lot and the cathedral, though this solution is not entirely effective.

The neighborhood’s historical and cultural significance adds another layer to the debate. The home that could be demolished is a part of the local landscape, and its potential removal has raised questions about the balance between religious needs and community values. As the city considers the proposal, the issue reflects broader discussions about land use, heritage preservation, and the role of religious institutions in urban settings.

The Assyrian Church of the East has long been a cornerstone of the Chicago Assyrian community, offering spiritual guidance, cultural support, and a sense of belonging. Its efforts to expand its facilities underscore the ongoing challenges of maintaining a vibrant religious presence in a rapidly changing urban environment. The outcome of this proposal will have implications not only for the church but also for the broader neighborhood.
